Welcome to ENT Africa, a charitable organization that brings life changing Ear, Nose and Throat surgery to some of the poorest people in the world.

What we do and how we work

Zambia is a beautiful country, but one of the world’s poorest. It is home to Victoria Falls and magnificent wildlife, but most people can’t afford basic medical care. It has only two ENT surgeons serving 12 million people. Compare this to Ireland, where over 60 surgeons serve a population of 4 million.

We operate in the University Teaching Hospital and the Beit Cure Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. We treat conditions that are never seen in Ireland where we have first world medical care, but in Africa, they cause people great physical suffering, as well as deepening their poverty and even taking their lives.

At present, we work in Lusaka for two weeks twice a year. In a typical visit, we help between 50 and 70 patients with surgery and hearing aids.

Projects

We have five main projects.

· Semi-annual visits delivering ENT care at Lusaka hospitals (ongoing)

· Supplying equipment to train Zambian ENT surgeons (ongoing)

· A state of the art ENT mobile clinic serving rural areas (commencing 2009)

· Provincial hospital ear clinics (in development)

· ENT hospital wing (in development)

Academic Accreditation

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland allows CME credit for the semi-annual visits because of their educational role.

History

How we started and where we're going

Following a fact finding mission in 2004 to establish the ENT needs of Zambia, Kieran O’Driscoll formed a charity organization ENT Surgery for Zambia Trust Fund Ltd. Operating under the name ENT Africa, the trust brings first world ENT care to Zambia’s poor.
